One of the coolest thing to do in Puglia is to visit (for a night, dinner or even just for a drink at sunset) one of the masserias! Masserias used to be the big farm / house of the landowners back in the days. Most of them have now been reconverted to hotels (a bit in the spirit of the Relais & Chateaux in France) but some of them are still also ‘working farms’ and keep on producing olive oil or wine (by the way, Pugliese olive oil, with its strong distinctive taste, is meant to be one of the absolute best in Italy!). Masseria are located on the “Masseria coast“, between Bari and Brindisi (my favourite part) and in the Salento Peninsula. From rustic to luxurious ones, each masseria is unique and has its own distinctive feel which will charm you. Here is the presentation of one of the most beautiful one which I visited in Puglia while attending a wedding last weekend: the Masseria Torre Maizza! Enjoy..
Imagine swimming in the middle of olive and palm trees..
Masserias are usually a bit back in the land (in the middle of olive trees field..), so not directly on the beach.. but don’t worry cause most of them will have their own private beach and a shuttle system to link the two places (in some hotels they use mini golf cars.. which is adorable!)
The atmosphere becomes even more magical in the evening when the air cools down and the staff starts to light up candles everywhere.. the perfect moment to enjoy a perfect glass of crisp fresh white (home) wine!
A last drink on the illuminated beach is not a bad idea either.. Arrrrrrgghh.. I already miss it ;(
